Up, Up and Away

Why do we love comic book heroes?

As a comic book geek, It amazes me how grand have superheroes become in the last decade. I get it, movies, tv and videogames show us that whether they are godlike creatures like Superman or “regular joes” like Spider - Man, they also lead normal lives and face everyday problems like rent, work and relationships; but that´s not why they get our utter admiration. It´s because in all those stories, they face life threatening and heartbreaking choices, but always end up saving the day and, of course, going home to their loved ones. And at this point is where the geekness kicks in because, if you follow these characters on their monthly adventures, you know that they not always come out winning, or just loosing a fistfight.

Many times throughout the history of comic books, we have witnessed the death of our héroes, of people close to them. We have seem them loose whatever humanity they had because they realize how alone and out of touch they are with the world they save. Their relationships end because they are too much to deal with, and, in that very instant when they see the object of their affection walk away is when they sometimes realize how useless is everything they fight for and just give up.
All of this happens in comic books as in real life, and that´s why we follow them, because they remind us that we can be extraordinary, but also, no matter how great it can get, everything can fall apart and we jus have to go on tall and pride.

That´s the real heroic part of it all, going on.
